When should we stray? Should we stray?

So I was watching ‘Before Sunset’ and the ending is ambiguous, the audience can’t really tell if Ethan Hawk misses his flight back home to wife and kid and stays the evening with Julie Deprey whom he met 9 years ago on a train in Europe where they spent a day together .

Interesting issues: Ethan married his wife because she was pregnant and now feels he’s running a ‘really small nursery with a stranger’ and over the years,he’s had frequent dreams of Julie Deprey in bed with him and she is pregnant but does not let him touch her and he wakes up from this dream sobbing with his wife looking at him and he feels a million miles away from her (his wife).

Julie by the way has never forgotten him and wrote a song about their time together ..

I don't care what they say I know what you meant for me that day I just wanted another try I just wanted another night Even if it doesn't seem quite right You meant for me much more Than anyone I've met before

Julie has a strained relationship with a war journalist whose frequent absences she admits are the best part of their relationship…. So should Ethan miss that flight?

I always believed in life, we look for a partner that will make us happier than we can ever be by ourselves. IF we are then miserable with the ones we’re with, does it then justify ‘straying’? Straying here means to dishonour loyalties forged within a relationship whether formalized in marriage or just mutually accepted between consenting individuals… there is after all another option, don’t stray….just end the relationship that makes you miserable and attempt another union that promises a level of happiness that you yearn for … we all are aiming for higher ground but there’s no need to hurt others along our upward trajectory ….so should Ethan call his wife, tell her its over and then proceed to ravage Julie ….or tell Julie to wait as he ends his marriage in due time … Questions ...questions …as with most matters in the context of the ‘everyday’, grand ideas are hard to operationalize especially when we’re empassioned by the thrill of the moment …intoxicated by lust , excitement and the promise of a reachable higher ground….We are after all weak creatures , sentient beings with feelings that often overcome our rational logical thoughts …but still I say, remember that straying means to dishonor another’s trust, hopefully we can all cling to that one thought and not surrender to temptation.
